The JJ Vance Memorial Summer Internship is an excellent opportunity for students interested in the biological and computational sciences. This program is open to academically motivated high school juniors from the Miami and Broward areas. During the program, you will engage in an 8-week intensive research program at the John P. Hussman Institute for Human Genomics (HIHG) laboratories. 


As an intern, you will be paired with a staff member, post-doctoral student, or faculty member, providing personalized mentorship. You will have a chance to work with relevant technology, develop your research and presentation skills, and explore your subject matter in depth. The HIHG is committed to identifying genes involved in human diseases, focusing on diagnosis, intervention, and prevention.


Location: Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, Miami, FL. Virtual and hybrid options are also offered.

Cost/Stipend: No cost or stipend. Students earn credit.

Dates: Year-round, from August to May.

Application Deadline: The hospital does not provide any details regarding this. You can check the M-DCPS internships page.

Eligibility: High school juniors and seniors, who hold an unweighted GPA of 2.5 or higher, an excellent school attendance record, and are enrolled in the Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) Academic Internship Program, can apply.


Nicklaus Children’s Hospital collaborates with M-DCPS to offer full academic-year internships from August to May. This program is for high school juniors and seniors who are enrolled in the Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) Academic Internship Program. This program will allow you to work in various healthcare administrative positions such as organizational development, talent management, law, finance, marketing, information technology, and more as well as gain hands-on experience while earning academic credit.


During the program, you will be expected to commit 5–10 hours per week with a flexible schedule and will have options for virtual, hybrid, or in-person participation. Your mentors will offer their time and guidance and provide meaningful, career-related experiences. Your mentor will also provide weekly time sheets and quarterly grade evaluations to help you learn and assess your performance throughout the internship.


Location: Lewis Arts Studio, Coral Gables, FL, or Koubek Center, Miami, FL. 

Cost/Stipend: No cost; A stipend of up to $12/hour for 180 hours cumulatively will be provided. 

Dates: 6 weeks, from June to July. The 2024 program took place from June 17 to July 26. 

Application Deadline: The application deadline for the 2024 summer internship was April 3. TBD for 2025. 

Eligibility: High school students from grades 9–12 can apply. Students must be at least 14 years old, a Florida resident, and meet I9 work eligibility requirements to apply. Non-residents can receive community service credit hours.


The ArtWorks Summer Internship is a paid arts program for high school students in Miami, open to those in grades 9 through 12. This six-week internship, running from June to July, will allow you to work across various art sectors, developing your creative skills and acquiring essential career skills while producing your works of art.


During the internship, you will work under the guidance of professional artists and Arts for Learning staff, reporting to either the Lewis Arts Studio or the Koubek Center. You will get to explore new possibilities, develop confidence, and learn to network and communicate with different kinds of people. You can apply for internships in areas such as visual art, dance and theater, music production, creative writing, animation, film, and architecture. In addition to the summer program, ArtWorks also offers internships in the Visual Arts during the Fall and Spring, providing ongoing opportunities for artistic development and professional growth.


Location: Virtual! You can work from anywhere in the world.

Cost: Starts at $1,990. Financial aid is available.

Dates: 8-week programs with multiple cohorts throughout the year, including spring, summer, fall, and winter. The upcoming fall cohort begins on September 16, 2024.

Application Deadline: Deadlines vary depending on the cohort. The upcoming fall cohort deadline is August 4, 2024.

Eligibility: Open to all high school students who can work for 10-20 hours/week, for 8-12 weeks. These internships are also open to undergraduates and gap-year students!


Ladder Internships, a fairly selective program founded by Harvard alumni, pairs high school students with startups and nonprofits around the world for virtual internships. You can choose the field you wish to work in, from a wide range of industries, including technology, machine learning, AI, computer science, finance, environmental science, sustainability, business, marketing, healthcare, medicine, media, journalism, and more. 


As an intern, you will work on meaningful projects that contribute to the startup or nonprofit’s larger mission, and present your work at the end of the program. This internship program includes one-on-one training in communication and time management, among other skills, and group training sessions with fellow interns. You will be paired with a manager at the startup and with a Ladder coach, who serves as a second mentor. The virtual internship is usually 8 weeks long. The internship opportunities in this program span the globe, with a concentration in the U.S., Asia, Europe, and the UK. You can explore all the options here on their application form.

Dates: Depending on the available faculty or staff-led shadowing experiences.

Eligibility: Open to high school students from Miami. 


The Rosenthal School of Marine and Atmospheric Science High School Internship Program offers a unique and enriching opportunity for high school students to gain exposure to the fields of marine, atmospheric, and earth sciences. During the program, you’ll have an opportunity to visit marine science laboratories, see first-hand ongoing research projects, and interact with underrepresented scientists from a variety of different fields and backgrounds. The limited availability of spaces makes this program competitive.


You will experience inventive methods of different types of instruction and gain hands-on experience through faculty and staff-led shadowing experiences at the University of Miami. In addition to the practical experience, you can also earn 1–2 credits towards high school graduation which will help enhance your academic profile. 


Location: Multiple work locations based on job openings throughout North Miami. 

Cost/Stipend: No cost; Stipend may or may not be provided. 

Dates: June 24–August 1, 2024. TBD for 2025.

Application Deadline: The deadline for the 2024 summer internship program was May 17. TBD for 2025. 

Eligibility: All currently enrolled high school students who are 16 years of age or older at the time of application and are residents of North Miami, are eligible to apply. However, household income and assets will be verified for eligibility.


The City of North Miami’s Youth Opportunity Board Summer Internship Program regularly recruits income-eligible students for paid internships over the summer. This program provides selected applicants with the chance to learn about and participate in the workings of local government. There are many departments to choose from such as governmental work, finance, IT, the library, and more. 


For instance, in the City Attorney’s Office, you will get to handle tasks such as filing, mail pick-up, document delivery, faxing, photocopying/scanning, and organizing files. Alternatively, in the Finance Department, you will rotate through divisions including Utility Billing, Administration, and Pension, performing clerical tasks such as photocopying, scanning invoices, filing, faxing, and handling mail pickup and distribution. 


You will be expected to work 20 hours per week and will have the option to volunteer additional hours. This program offers you a valuable opportunity to gain hands-on experience and insights into local government operations.

Eligibility: As per the previous year’s eligibility, high school juniors and seniors who live and attend school in St. Lucie County can apply.


The 5-week program hosted by Florida International University’s Center for Translational Science (FIU-CTS) provides an ideal opportunity for motivated high school juniors and seniors to delve into biomedical science research. During the program, you’ll be guided by expert scientists specializing in neuroscience, aging and wellness, heart and pulmonary physiology, pathology, metabolism, infection, and drug discovery. You will get to conduct experiments, analyze data, and interpret research findings within the center’s laboratories. 


You will work in state-of-the-art labs conducting experiments and obtaining results and learn to apply problem-solving skills, gain critical thinking, investigate hypotheses, and apply the scientific method. You will receive a participation certificate and a letter signed by the Program Director and earn over 100 volunteer hours if you complete the entire program. Throughout the program, you will also get to network with professionals, present your achievements at a luncheon, and receive a scientific poster to showcase your work in future competitions.


Location: In-person, virtual, or hybrid. Students are matched with one of the internship providers throughout Miami. 

Cost/Stipend: No cost; A stipend of $1500 is provided to the interns. Students also get to partake in dual enrollment in Miami Dade College with their credits counting toward their degree if they opt to enroll in the same college upon graduating.

Dates: 5 weeks, July 1–August 5, 2024. TBD for 2025.  

Application Deadline: The application deadline for the 2024 program was May 24. TBD for 2025.  

Eligibility: Students must be in 10th grade and above, between the ages of 15–18, enrolled in a Miami Dade public school, and have a minimum 2.5 weighted high school GPA.


The Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ Summer Youth Internship Program offers an opportunity for high school students in the Miami-Dade County area to gain work experience along with earning credit. The 5-week summer program requires students to commit roughly 30 hours of part-time work each week, totaling 150 hours. During the program, you will be required to complete the Online Florida Ready To Work Soft Skills And Schoology Course within 30 days of enrollment and then you’ll be matched with relevant organizations based on your applications.


You can earn dual enrollment credit through Miami Dade College for courses such as Co-op Work Experience in Computer Information Systems, Engineering, and General Business Internships. These internships bridge academic coursework with practical experience, enhancing your career readiness and understanding of your chosen field. Your performance will be evaluated by an assigned teacher who will oversee your assignments and timesheets, ensuring they meet the program’s requirements. This internship program will not only provide hands-on experience but will also help you develop professional skills, enhancing your future career prospects. Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ Academic Year Internship Program pairs high school juniors and seniors with community professionals for internships, helping them gain experience and knowledge in their intended collegiate fields of study and/or careers for an entire school year. Internship providers in the program dedicate their time and expertise to provide interns with valuable, career-related experiences.


During the internship program, you’ll have opportunities to intern at circuit courts, where you’ll have direct access to judges to learn not only about the justice system but also the inner workings of a judges’ chamber. You’ll have an option of learning what goes behind the scenes at a non-profit organization or working at a consulting firm and experiencing giving your suggestions on tasks that would benefit any company. You can also intern at a law firm where you will get to build a strong foundation for office workings and gain interpersonal skills.


Location: Florida International University, Miami, FL

Eligibility: High school juniors or graduating seniors who plan to attend FIU or are accepted FIU transfer students, can apply. Those applying must be at least 16 years old by the start of the program, and hold an unweighted GPA of 3.0 or higher.


Florida International University offers a comprehensive Summer Research Internship focused on cardiovascular health for local high school students and FIU transfer students. Spanning 8 weeks, this program will allow you to engage deeply in innovative research while enhancing your skills in research, analysis, writing, and presentation.


Before starting your internship, you will be paired with an FIU faculty research mentor and will be expected to complete a series of online safety courses. Throughout the program, you will get to participate in weekly professional and academic development workshops, as well as intern meetings featuring journal clubs and case study discussions. At the culmination of the program, you will have to submit research abstracts and deliver presentations at an awards ceremony. Outstanding presenters receive awards and are invited to showcase their work at the December MARC U*STAR symposium, highlighting their contributions to cardiovascular health research.
