If you’re serious about entering the world of research, then there are several ways to get started on the right path in middle school. Engaging in research fosters critical thinking, enhances problem-solving skills, and nurtures a sense of curiosity about the world. It is a great way to pursue in-depth learning in a field of your choice, going beyond the average school curriculum and promoting independent learning and intellectual growth.

How to pursue research in middle school?

If you’re wondering how you can get started on your research journey, here are a few easy options to choose from:

  • School resources: Your teachers and school librarians can provide guidance on selecting topics, accessing resources, and structuring research projects. Some schools also have dedicated research clubs that you can join and benefit from.

  • Research programs: Participating in structured programs offers mentorship and a platform to explore research interests. Some examples of such programs include:

    • Lumiere Junior Explorer Program: Designed for middle schoolers to engage in research under the guidance of expert mentors.

    • Georgetown University's Medical Research Program: Teaches middle school students the process researchers use to formulate, conduct, and evaluate evidence-based research.

    • DynaMIT: A free summer program hosted by MIT aimed at stimulating interest in STEM among middle school students through hands-on activities and projects.

  • Competitions and challenges: With a little bit of practice and experience, you can start engaging in various contests, which can further inspire innovative thinking. Examples include:

    • International Research Olympiad (IRO): Challenges students to develop research skills and apply them across various disciplines, fostering critical thinking and analysis.

    • Broadcom MASTERS: Encourages middle school students to translate their personal interests into a passion for STEM by participating in science and engineering projects.

Some additional resources

Pursuing your own research project is a fun and exciting venture. To further support your endeavors, we’ve compiled some resources that can offer guidance on the research process and provide platforms specifically tailored for middle schoolers:

One other option—the Lumiere Research Scholar Program

If you’re interested in pursuing independent research, consider applying to one of the Lumiere Research Scholar Programs, selective online high school programs for students founded with researchers at Harvard and Oxford. Last year, we had over 4,000 students apply for 500 spots in the program! You can find the application form here.

Also check out the Lumiere Research Inclusion Foundation, a non-profit research program for talented, low-income students. Last year, we had 150 students on full need-based financial aid!

Stephen is one of the founders of Lumiere and a Harvard College graduate. He founded Lumiere as a PhD student at Harvard Business School. Lumiere is a selective research program where students work 1-1 with a research mentor to develop an independent research paper.
