NJIT's Forensic Science Initiative (FSI) Program—Is It Worth It?

If you’re interested in STEM and crime and want a course that lets you explore these subjects simultaneously, consider applying for a forensic science program! Such programs allow students interested in forensic science to do hands-on research, go on field trips related to the discipline, and explore potential career pathways. Moreover, participating in a summer program is a great way to demonstrate a sustained interest in a subject, something that college admissions boards value!

One forensic science summer offering worth considering is the New Jersey Institute of Technology’s Forensic Science Initiative’s Summer JumpStart program. Here, we will dive into the program’s features, providing information on its cost, eligibility, deadlines, prestige, and more. We will end with some pros and cons of applying and give you our review.

What is NJIT’s FSI Summer JumpStart all about?

Summer JumpStart is a five-week in-person program for rising high school seniors to learn about the four main components of forensic science: biology, chemistry, law, and crime-scene investigation. Teaching is done through a mixture of lectures, hands-on lab research, and several field visits in the Greater Metropolitan Area. The program takes place at the NJIT campus in Newark, New Jersey, where you can access their custom-built labs. The JumpStart program aims to encourage students to pursue degrees at NJIT.

How much does the program cost?

The FSI JumpStart program costs $1,490. There is an additional $60 registration fee. Some scholarships are available.

What are the program dates?

FSI JumpStart takes place over five weeks in the summer. The program will run from July 7 to August 7, 2025. Applications will open in early 2025, and students usually have until March to submit their applications.

Who is eligible to apply?

The program is open to rising high school seniors from select Newark public high schools who meet the following criteria:

  • Have at least a C grade in trigonometry, biology, and chemistry

  • Pre-enrolled in a forensic science course for senior year, preferably NJIT’s Introduction to Forensic Science (doing so will earn you college credits!)

  • Enrollment in pre-calculus in senior year

Note: to apply, your school must nominate you for the program.

What do I need to apply?

To apply, you must submit the following documents:

  • High school transcripts and latest standardized test scores (PSAT, SAT, ACT, etc)

  • Personal motivation letter

  • Recommendation letter from a science teacher

  • Parent/guardian approval

You can view the student application guide here to learn more about the application process.

Is the program prestigious?

NJIT FSI’s JumpStart program is moderately prestigious and selective. NJIT ranks #86 nationally and has a well-known forensic science program. FSI JumpStart accepts only 24 students annually, making applications competitive. However, applicants must be from select Newark public high schools, limiting the number of students who could apply. Additionally, the program is paid ($1,490), which lowers prestige.

What will I study at FSI JumpStart?

At FSI JumpStart, you will learn about forensic biology, chemistry, law, and crime scene investigations. The program includes significant lab work and field visits to places like the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, Glassroots, and various federal courts. Through the coursework, you will be introduced to new forensic analysis methods, evidence-gathering and procedural law, and investigative laboratory procedures. Some techniques you will learn about include trace evidence analysis, DNA identification, and forensic microscopy. You will also understand the importance of chain of custody procedures and expert witness testimonies in courtrooms.

What does a typical day at FSI JumpStart look like?

During the four weeks you spend at NJIT, you will be involved in law work, field visits, lectures, and test and college application preparation. A typical day at FSI JumpStart begins with three hours of forensic lab work in the morning, followed by a lunch break. In the afternoon session, you will discuss case studies in class and attend college preparation sessions, which include standardized test prep, personal statement writing, and applying for financial aid. Every Friday, you will go on a field trip.

What are the pros and cons of FSI JumpStart?

Now that we know more about the program, let’s jump into some reasons why you should consider applying, and a few that might make another program more worthwhile!

Pros:

1. You get to pursue your interest in forensic science

NJIT offers state-of-the-art facilities where you can learn about the different components of forensic science, go on field trips, and analyze case studies. The FSI JumpStart program provides a solid introduction to forensic science, helping you make an informed career decision.

2. You can earn college credits!

If you opt to study the Introduction to Forensic Science college course during your senior year in high school, you can earn up to three transferable college credits! These can be quite useful if you decide to pursue a degree in forensic science as you can opt for other college courses you normally wouldn’t have the time for.

3. You join a program that makes a real-world impact

Becoming a skilled forensic scientist can help solve crimes and separate fact from fiction. NJIT’s forensics teams have helped overturn wrongful convictions and free people convicted of crimes they did not commit.

4. You join a competitive program

FSI JumpStart accepts only 24 students annually, making it selective. Additionally, you must meet the minimum grade requirements and be nominated by your school to be eligible.

5. You get a headstart on college prep

The program offers standardized test prep and helps with writing personal statements and compiling your student portfolio, which can help you get into your preferred college—whether it's NJIT or elsewhere!

Cons:

1. You have to pay for the program

FSI JumpStart costs $1,490, which can limit the number of students who apply. Deserving candidates who cannot afford the program may have to look elsewhere. Financial aid, though available, is limited.

2. You have to reside nearby

The program is open to students from Newark only. Out-of-state or international students interested in the program cannot apply.

Our review—what do we think of the program?

If you’re serious about forensic science as a career and live near the NJIT campus, the FSI JumpStart program is worth considering: you get a sound introduction to forensic science, gain valuable lab time, and do hands-on activities. You can even earn college credits. On the other hand, you should consider an alternate program if you do not attend an eligible high school.

One other option—the Lumiere Research Scholar Program

If you’re interested in pursuing independent research, you could also consider applying to one of the Lumiere Research Scholar Programs, selective online high school programs for students founded with researchers at Harvard and Oxford. Last year, we had over 4000 students apply for 500 spots in the program! You can find the application form here.

Also check out the Lumiere Research Inclusion Foundation, a non-profit research program for talented, low-income students. Last year, we had 150 students on full need-based financial aid!
