UT Health San Antonio's BEAT Academy—Should You Apply?
Medicine is one of the most competitive fields, and if you want to pursue a career in it, it is best to start early. One way to do this is by participating in pre-college programs for medicine and research. These opportunities offer hands-on experience, professional mentorship, and insights into advanced concepts that most high school curricula don’t cover. These are often highly selective programs, and participating in them can show that you’re serious about pursuing a career in the health sciences or biomedical research. Today's blog is a deep dive into the BEAT Academy at the University of Texas and what makes it a valuable opportunity for biomedical research exposure.
What is the BEAT Academy?
The BEAT, or Biomedical Excellence and Academic Training Academy, is a one-week summer program hosted by UT Health San Antonio for high school juniors and seniors. The program introduces you to various medical and research topics through laboratory tours, clinical observations, and lectures by faculty. BEAT Academy’s goal is to provide an introduction to careers in medicine and medical research. There is a strong focus on experiential learning and exposure to modern techniques and medical advances, as well as college prep sessions that will enable you to pursue medical research as a career.
How is the BEAT Academy structured?
The program spans five days at the UT Health San Antonio campus. Previously, it ran from July 8 to July 12. Each day blends activities, lectures, and skill development sessions. You will engage in live anatomy lessons, understand basic biomedical research techniques, explore the latest advances in biomolecular technology, and interact with patients. All classes are conducted in UT Health’s labs and classrooms and are led by faculty. The program also incorporates leadership development sessions and college prep workshops. The curriculum covers various health science topics, from anatomy and physiology to molecular biology and neurodegeneration.
Is it prestigious?
While the BEAT Academy is highly selective, it is essential to remember that it is still an introductory program. Though admissions are competitive, with only 20 spots open yearly, it is a week-long opportunity with relatively limited learning. Still, you will gain exposure to the latest advances in medical research from professionals, which can lead to future mentorship opportunities and collaborations. Though short, the curriculum is rich and varied, focusing on interactive learning. Overall, we would rate this program as moderately prestigious and a good opportunity to pursue if you’re new to medicine.
Who is eligible to apply?
To apply, you must be a high schooler in good academic standing. Since this is an introductory program, there are no criteria for grades or prerequisite courses.
How does the application process work?
An application to the BEAT Academy requires the following:
Your unofficial high school transcript.
A letter of recommendation from a current teacher, ideally your science or math teacher.
A one-page essay describing how participation in BEAT can enable your academic goals.
A $50 application fee.
How much does the BEAT Academy cost?
The registration fee for the BEAT Academy is $700, in addition to the aforementioned application fee of $50.
Pros and cons of applying
Pros:
A hands-on introduction to medical research: You will receive practical lessons in biomedical research and healthcare practices, such as studying the anatomy of the human body or conducting biomolecular experiments.
Learning from mentors: You will engage in theoretical lectures and receive guidance from UT Health faculty and graduates.
Skill development opportunities: Besides academic learning, you will get the chance to build your leadership skills.
Assistance with college prep: College prep sessions will help you gain clarity on the career and academic pathways in the health sciences.
Cons:
Very competitive admissions: Since the program is limited to 20 spots, it can be challenging to get accepted.
Extremely short duration: The program is only a week long, which will limit your learning and takeaways.
The cost may be a barrier: Given the short duration of the program, the $750 fee may be a concern for some.
Should you apply?
UT Health San Antonio’s BEAT Academy is a good introduction for any high schooler interested in health sciences and biomedical research. The program’s structure offers a solid combination of hands-on learning, mentorship from the faculty of a top healthcare institution, and career exploration. If you are curious about medicine and eager to explore the health sciences in depth, this program could be a valuable experience. Though not prestigious or profile-building on its own, this program can be a key first step to a future career in medical research.
One other option—the Lumiere Research Scholar Program
If you’re interested in pursuing independent research, consider applying to one of the Lumiere Research Scholar Programs, selective online high school programs for students founded with researchers at Harvard and Oxford. Last year, we had over 4,000 students apply for 500 spots in the program! You can find the application form here.
Also check out the Lumiere Research Inclusion Foundation, a non-profit research program for talented, low-income students. Last year, we had 150 students on full need-based financial aid!
Stephen is one of the founders of Lumiere and a Harvard College graduate. He founded Lumiere as a PhD student at Harvard Business School. Lumiere is a selective research program where students work 1-1 with a research mentor to develop an independent research paper.
